What BT Web Protect is 

A free security feature that helps protect you from viruses, scams and phishing attacks by blocking you from visiting a potentially harmful website a potentially harmful website. Any device using your BT Broadband connection or logged into a UK EE WiFi hotspot with your BT ID is protected automatically. 

 

You don’t need to download or install anything, and it won’t slow down your broadband.

 

How BT Web Protect works 

When you browse the internet, BT Web Protect checks the websites you visit against a list of known harmful or suspicious sites. If a site is considered unsafe, you may see a warning page. You can choose to continue if you’re sure the site is safe.

 

What you’ll see when a site is blocked

If the destination website start http you will see a warning page. You can choose to continue to the destination, although we don't recommend and site is likely to be malicious. For some secure, https, websites that are considered harmful, you might see a blank screen instead of a warning. That still means the site has been blocked for your safety. 

 

What BT Web Protect covers 

  • all devices using your BT Broadband connection 
  • devices connected to EE WiFi hotspots (when logged in with your BT ID) 
  • browsing and link-clicking (including links in emails) 
  • no additional software is required. 

 

What BT Web Protect doesn’t cover 

 

  • VPN 
  • Apple device and have Apple Private Relay enabled 
  • a browser or software that avoid using BT’s DNS service

 

How to turn it on  

Go to My BT and check the BT Web Protect status in your security extras. If it’s switched on, protection is active. 

Turning on BT Web Protect: 

  1. Log in in to My BT with your BT ID.  
  2. Scroll down and tap Your Security
  3. Scroll down to BT Web Protect.  
  4. Select Switch on BT Web Protect.  
  5. You’ll get a confirmation screen, and your service will be working within 2 hours.

 

How to turn BT Web Protect off 

  1. Log in to My BT
  2. Go to Manage my extras
  3. Select Turn off in the BT Web Protect panel. 
  4. Changes can take up to two hours to take effect.

 

BT Web Protect and BT Virus Protect

You still need antivirus even if you use BT Web Protect 

BT Web Protect and BT Virus Protect are separate products. They work differently and protect you in different ways: 

  • BT Web Protect blocks harmful websites at the network level. 
  • BT Virus Protect protects individual devices from viruses, spyware and other threats, both online and offline. 

Using both together gives you the most complete protection.  

 

Trouble shooting 

Why you might get multiple BT Web Protect warning pages 

Multiple warnings only occur if you try to continue to your chosen website after you’ve received a warning message. You may get a second warning of you choose to continue past the first warning. 

 

How to appeal if a site is blocked by BT Web Protect 

Ask us to review the site

If you own, manage or regularly use the site, you can request a reclassification

 

Tell us: 

  • the web address that's being blocked 
  • why you think the block is incorect
  • any information that helps us understand what the site is for

Our security partners will assess the category and update it if needed.

 

While you wait

If BT Web Protect is active on your broadband, the site will stay blocked until the review is complete. If you decide to turn off BT Web Protect, make sure your device has up-to-date security installed so you stay protected.
