Will BT slow down my broadband?

At busy times, internet providers can slow down traffic on the network. This is called ‘traffic management' and it’s a way of making sure you get the best possible service.

What you need to know

We don’t slow down your broadband speeds, even at busy times.

We don’t restrict downloads or file sharing.

Your speed depends on your connection and usage, not traffic limits.

What “traffic management” means

Sometimes, internet providers slow down certain types of data during busy periods to manage demand.

This is called traffic management.

We do things differently:

  • We don’t apply speed restrictions to your broadband package.
  • We treat your internet use the same, regardless of what you’re doing.

When traffic may be prioritised

We may prioritise certain services within your home network, such as:

  • TV channels delivered over broadband.
  • Apps that rely on real-time connections.

Why you might see slower speeds

Your connection can still slow down if:

  • Many devices are using your Wi-Fi.
  • You’re far from your Hub.
  • There’s local network congestion outside BT’s control.

We've also signed up to a voluntary code of practice which aims to make traffic management easier to understand. If you want to know more, visit the Ofcom website.
